About Me

Let me introduce myself. My name is Jeri Byington and I was born in the state of Utah, in the USA in 1960. I am a sculptor, lapidary and skilled in the ancient Egyptian art of stone turning. Presently I am creating magnificently carved stone vases from the most delicate, fragile and stunningly beautiful alabaster stone.

History and Background

bullet

I have lived for nearly forty one years nestled against the Rocky Mountains in northern Utah, with eighteen of those years learning about lapidary and the art of stone sculpture. I currently reside in the south western end of the state in the city of St. George. This has been my home for the last five years. I love this location for its scenic beauty and inspirational national parks.  But I especially love this area for it's abundance and availability of the local alabaster. Alabaster is my stone of choice for sculpture and it is most striking when handled correctly.

Why do I carve stone?.

bulletMany mediums lend themselves to the expression of instant, spontaneous emotion. The time, patience and intimacy required to shape stone forms a bond between it and the artist. For me, the stone is not "worked", instead my thoughts shape the stone while the stone in turn shapes my thoughts, with the end result revealing something new about each. The final expression is always a surprise.

bulletSo how do I know when its done? That part is easy: When I fall in love with it.
